I’m currently completing my Law Degree from Victoria University. I’ve just moved home after 4 years in Wellington. I’m also working towards a small exhibition of paintings to be shown in Auckland.
I enjoy painting and it’s something I am constantly working on.
Mum is a Momager who looks after the family and is also an architect. She is currently designing a house and art studio to be built in Russell, Kororareka.
Creativity is so important, especially for young children/teenagers. Teenage years can be challenging, but I have always loved turning to painting or drawing as a form of escapism and a way to be expressive.
Also, with the advances in technology and social media, it's more important than ever for kids to be creative and use their imagination, in whatever form. I think creativity is best when it’s playful and fun.
Hmm.. that’s hard, I think a strong work ethic and the importance of education was always something that has been instilled in me from a young age. Also, to do things in my own way, and to never worry what people think. Oh, and to always look after your paint. I can hear Mum now saying, “put the lids on and wash your brushes!”.
My inspiration for my work comes from many sources, including books, TV, music, museums, other artists and travel. For me, the best way to get into a good flow is to simply paint and draw, creating a substantial amount of work. Once I have built up this momentum, ideas tend to flow fast.
My favourite work is a painting that my Dad did for me when I was a little kid. It has always been a piece I have had in my bedroom so whenever it’s hung on the wall it feels like home. It has followed me to a few different flats over the years.
Naturally wanted to find out more and with it being Mother's Day we asked four ways Mika and her mum find freedom, expansion and the creative process.
Mum - Walking on the beach most mornings brings the feeling of freedom into my life. Freedom feels light and unburdened.
Mika - I feel freedom in a literal way when I have no plans or commitments and I can spend guilt-free time either watching tv, or hanging out with friends and family. Freedom feels stress-free and relaxing.
Mum - every day, just doing everyday activities, cooking for the family, walking with the dogs.
Mika - Definitely when I am with my family and friends, with a glass of wine.
Mum - My favourite jewellery pieces have sentimental attachment, given to me by my Grandmothers. I love the sense of time and history that these pieces have.
Mika- My favourite piece of jewellery is my watch that was a 21st gift.
Mum - DIY reno jobs around the house haha. Playing with new drawing software or materials. Or travelling and visiting really good art shows and being inspired by the work.
Mika - I guess the beginning stages of the process, being inspired by other artists, visiting museums and galleries and generating ideas.
