Grace & Savreak

Grace & Savreak

What began as a high school romance has grown into ten years of shared memories and a life built together. Grace and Savreak’s story is one of deep connection and everyday rituals that make a partnership feel like home. This is a glimpse into their journey so far, and the beginning of whatever comes next.

Can you tell us about yourselves, what does your everyday life together look like?

Grace - We actually work together for 3 days a week at Savreak sister’s bakery in Glen Eden, when we come home we have our daily routine of going to the gym, cooking a homemade meal together then relaxing at night with a show or movie. Some nights we spend time learning something new - lately it’s been self-improvement and financial investing.

How did you two meet, and what was that first impression like?

We met in school (Manurewa High School).

Savreak - my first impression of Grace was I thought she was this really cute girl with curly hair and I noticed her when I went to play badminton with my mates after school and she was playing for the school team. A friend of mine had told me that she was “half-Japanese” and I actually believed him. Later on she told me she studied Japanese but was actually Maori (my bad).

Grace - he was so shy at first, we walked around school together and barely spoke a word to each other. Aside from “what class do you have today?”. He seemed like a really sweet and kind person, but I feel like neither of our personalities really came through because we were both so shy.

What was the proposal like?

G - I had a feeling it was gonna happen that day but I didn’t know where or how. And when it did happen, the moment felt like time had stopped and it was just us two, it was perfect. Originally a spot Savreak wanted to propose was at Bastion Point (where we had our first date). But given we were in Kyoto (celebrating 10 years together), the spot changed twice before finally picking Maruyama Park. Even though it wasn’t the first choice it’ll now be the perfect excuse for us to visit for anniversaries.

What was the moment you realised this was the person you wanted to build a life with?

G - I knew Savreak was my true love in the first year of dating. I can’t really explain how I “knew” but I just did and it felt completely different from anything I had ever experienced before. In the first year or two of dating, I was the one who thought more about our future like marriage, children, growing old together, and building a life together. It was a bit hard at times knowing that we weren’t necessarily on the same timeline when it came to those dreams. But at the same time we were still just kids and I stayed because underneath it all I trusted him and I knew that he would always do right by me and would always love me in his own way. I think that’s what made my love for him feel so certain. I didn’t know exactly when we would get married, or when we would have children, or what our life would look like. I just knew who I wanted beside me when we got there.

S -  Because we were both teenagers/young adults when we started dating, we were both learning how to understand each other. Grace had a feisty, sensitive and deeply emotional personality and there were moments where her words and reactions hurt me more than she realised. However, what meant the most to me was when she realised how her behaviour was affecting me and our relationship, she made the decision to change because she wanted to become a better person and partner. I’ve watched her grow into a phenomenal woman who’s not only patient but understanding and supportive. She’s become a strong pillar for me recently when I was struggling with a lot of mental health and anxiety issues and reminded me that I didn’t need to go through these difficult moments alone. Over the past 10 years of experiencing these moments of growth and change it made me realise I want to build a life with her and continue being better together.

When you look at your ring years from now, what do you hope it reminds you of?

Our youth, we’re 26 & 27 now, but deep down I feel like we’re still the 16 & 17 year old kids we were back in school. We’ve gone through 10 years of life together and it still feels like yesterday we were going to ball together or watching our first horror movie with friends or walking around school like awkward teenagers. I think no matter how old we get and how much time goes by, we’ll always be teenage high school sweethearts spiritually.

Can you share with us a ritual or tradition you have as a couple. What do you both do to stay connected?

We always do something fun or special for our dating anniversary. For 10 years, we went to Japan for 2 weeks - which is where we got engaged. We try to stay connected in our relationship through deep conversations, it could be once a month but most times it’s sort of out of the blue or whenever we feel like either of us have felt a disconnection. We always try our best to understand each other's perspectives and learn a lot from one another because of it.

What are you both most excited about for the wedding?

It feels more like anxiety at the moment because we haven’t planned anything out yet. We do have ideas but because we both come from different cultures there’s different expectations but in the end we’d always do what’s within our best interest. For now it’s all still on the Pinterest boards.

How do you honour and celebrate each other?

G - I write a letter to Savreak for his birthday, Valentine’s Day and our anniversary because I feel like it’s more heartfelt writing by hand and showering him with all of his favourite things like chocolate, video games and food.

S - I just give her anything she wants cause I love to spoil her. Her favourite things are handbags and trips/experiences.

Any moment we get, we’ll just cuddle and tell each other how much we appreciate and love one another.
