Our Journals: Lilliana Bowery

Lilliana Bowery

Lilliana Bowery

Meet Lilliana, Aussie surfer and rising Netflix star. We talked to Lilliana about her journey from surfing to acting, and what makes her feel most alive during each creative process. We’re inspired by her haerenga for connection to Aotearoa, something she is super passionate about.

Tell our community a bit about yourself and what you do.

I am a professional surfer and actress from Australia. I’ve come to Aotearoa to connect back with my roots and learn about my Ancestors and whakapapa; to learn more about who I am. Through surfing, I have travelled around the world and explored so many cultures. Now, it’s time to explore mine. It is something I am very passionate about.

How long have you been surfing and what inspired you to get into acting?

I’ve been surfing since I was 4 years old. My Dad taught me how to surf as he is part of the Industry making surfboards. All my life, that’s all I ever wanted to do, acting hadn’t ever crossed my mind, until the opportunity arose from my sponsors. The casting for Surviving Summer was an open casting call, they reached out to many surfers around Australia to Audition, and they also reached out to brands, such as Billabong, (my sponsor). My team managers knew straight away that I would be a great fit, so they encouraged me to do it. Mind you, I really didn’t want to, I couldn’t see myself as an ‘Actress,’ but with a big push from my Parents, I went on to audition and ended up getting the role. I was stoked.

When do you feel most alive in terms of your creative process? And what does that change between the mindset of acting vs. surfing?

I feel most alive and creative when I’m in the Moana; surfing. I was grateful enough to translate this through to my acting, as my character represented someone who had the same love for the ocean as I did. It didn’t really feel like I was having to act, I was just simply being me!

What brings the feeling of freedom into your life, and how does that feel for you?

No doubt, the Ocean brings so much freedom in my life. When I’m surfing, all of my thoughts and worries go away. It’s just me and the sea. It’s a place where I can always rely on to make me feel safe, happy and calm. There’s no place like it.

We believe that the ocean and water have amazing healing elements, do you have a favourite memory of being in the surf or a place that has special meaning to you?

The ocean and water is definitely my place of healing. I don’t have a core memory, but for me, when I feel most happy and grounded is when I am surfing my home break Little Cove in Noosa Heads with my Whānau.

Do you have a favourite piece of jewellery? What does it mean to you?

My favourite piece of Jewellery is the Aquamarine Gold Blossom and Fleur whakakai. They really resonate with me. I love wearing gold Jewellery, and my birthstone also happens to be Aquamarine. Associated with the sea, aquamarine evokes a feeling of serenity and tranquillity, just like how I feel when I’m in the Moana.
