Garnet
The word Garnet is derived from the Latin word for pomegranate, "granatum," in reference to the stone's similarity in shape and colour to the pomegranate seed.
Garnets are often associated with love and friendship due to their symbolism of the heart, inner fire, and life force. They are also believed to provide a grounding force for the root chakras, which is essential for feeling safe and making choices that align with our well-being. As the birthstone for January and associated with the Zodiac Capricorn, Garnets are often worn as a personal talisman for those who celebrate these astrological elements.
Red Garnets, with their vibrant colour, are associated with the root chakra, Muladhara. Located at the base of the spine, Muladhara is the energetic field found here. It is where we have all of our memories stored and is our source for feeling grounded within ourselves. This chakra allows us to tap into our strength and security, providing a solid foundation for life.
Garnets come in a range of colours, from green (Tsavorite) to a deep red (Rhodolite). On the MOHS scale, which measures mineral hardness, Garnets score a 6.5 - 7.5 out of 10. This makes them durable (though not indestructible) and are great for daily wear.
Tsavorite
Tsavorite is a bright green Garnet known for its durability, and intense color, often compared to Emerald. With a MOHS hardness of 7.0 - 7.5, it is suitable for daily wear. Tsavorite is prized for its high clarity and scarcity, with colours ranging from a light to deep green.
Rhodolite Garnet
As one of the deeper red tones, Rhodolite Garnet is popular for its vibrant brilliance and clarity. With a MOHS hardness of 7.0 - 7.5, it is suitable for daily wear. Rhodolite is known as a stone of commitment, symbolising deep, passionate love and affection.
It's important to care for Garnets to preserve their longevity. To ensure the brilliance of Garnets, make sure to clean them regularly. Using mild soap and warm water, gently scrub with a soft toothbrush, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry.
It is recommended to store Garnets separately from other jewellery, especially stones higher on the MOHS scale (Sapphires, Diamonds), to prevent any scratches. Make sure to avoid exposing them to harsh chemicals or high temperatures and take them off during swimming or exercising, as this can damage the gemstone.
