Our Journals: Imogen & Tariq

Our Journals: Imogen & Tariq
I - We met in Melbourne (when we both lived there) at a music event that Tariq had organised. I had been to some wineries during the day for my friend’s birthday. I was really close to not going out, but my friend persuaded me, and I’m so glad she did as I met Tariq there - what stood out to me was how calm and easy to talk to he was. At the end of the event we exchanged details and started messaging, then met up not long after. I remember thinking I just wanted to be around him and hang out, so we met up and never did stop hanging out!
T - I first met Imogen in Melbourne at a music event that my friends and I had arranged. After the event, I was putting the equipment away and remember seeing Imogen in a field with a nice dress on. We started talking, and what stood out to me was how friendly and welcoming she was, she came across funny, kind and warm. We had our first date a week later, and it felt like we had always been a part of each other’s lives.
I - For me it’s definitely about the little things, it’s making coffee for each other in the morning, or knowing which is my favourite wine from the shop! It’s coming home from work and asking how the other person’s day was, then genuinely listening/caring about the answer. It’s also being supportive of their goals and encouraging them to smash them, always!
T - The way I show love to Imogen is by understanding her and what she likes, whether it’s her favourite food or wine, or doing the tasks around the house that she dislikes. It’s also about making sure that we always make time for each other, no matter how busy our schedules get.
I - I really admire Tariq’s calm energy and ability to take anything in his stride with ease, it’s definitely something I could do more of! Also his interest in life and openness to new experiences, he frequently has a new hobby that he commits to learning/practising. This excitement for life is infectious and has influenced me to try many new things during our relationship, from salsa to surfing.
T - Imogen has love and compassion for everyone, she always has such a positive outlook on life. I also love that she’s family-oriented. And that she’s genuine and loves bringing people together.
I - We have been together 7 years so I had hoped it was coming! But I had no idea he was planning it for so long, including designing the ring with Zoë. I always thought I would have an idea it was maybe coming as I know him so well, and I also thought he would be really nervous on the day so I would know. But neither of these things turned out to be true! He proposed in Colorado, where some of his family live, and it was my first day there straight off the plane. We drove to a stunning viewpoint and he asked the question. It was so perfect and special, and very very thoughtful! From the time of year (around our anniversary), to the specially designed ring, to the gorgeous location where some of his family live. He did well!
T - We both wanted to get married eventually and I knew the ring had to be from Zoë and Morgan - Imogen loves the jewellery. We had planned a trip to the US to see my family and I knew this would be the perfect time to propose. I kept the proposal a secret from everyone to make sure it would be a surprise. As I grew up in Colorado I know the mountains there and had in mind the perfect spot with the most beautiful view, to make the moment as special as I could. I didn’t feel too nervous about the proposal, just more excited, I couldn’t wait to give her the ring and it not be a secret anymore.
I - Looking at venues, there are so many beautiful ones in NZ! But the most exciting thing will be having our family all together, our immediate family live around the world in America, Canada and England, so the thought of having them all in one place is extremely special.
T - Having all the family together definitely. And the stag do!
T - One day I was in a Zoë & Morgan store with Imogen looking at jewellery, naturally she started looking at the engagement rings! That day I managed to get a rough idea of what she wanted - I knew that she wanted a gold ring with a green or blue sapphire in the middle. After this, I reached out to Zoë & Morgan - Zoë and her team were so helpful, they helped me work through ideas, mixing and matching designs, sketching rings on an iPad. Through the process, we landed on the perfect design that was unique and suited Imogen’s style - a green, pear-shaped sapphire in the centre with kite diamonds either side. In the final design, I love how the sword edging on the band integrates with the kite diamonds, and how the overall design draws your attention to the centre stone. There was a certain type of green I wanted for the stone that reminded me of Imogen and one day Zoë showed me something that matched it perfectly. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the one.
